In tourism, one of the factors that determines the seasonality of many destinations is the climate. In Pará, changes in the rainfall regime are the main factor, since the heat here is a constant. And since we’re talking about an island destination, it’s essential to understand how the tides influence the tour you’ll be taking.
TIDES
The Coming and Going that Changes the Script
Riverside life revolves around the tide. On Combu Island, the water level can rise or fall several meters throughout the day, which directly affects access to the streams, floating restaurants and even the trails.
The range of variation from the lowest to the highest tide is up to 3 meters and the process of filling (low to high) or emptying (high to low) takes around six hours.
- High tide: ideal for boat trips and easy access to flooded areas such as igarapés and boreholes. Some places may be inaccessible or muddy, requiring more care when walking.
- Low tide: ideal for walking on land. When it’s very low, it’s bad for bathing, as the delimited areas (pools) can be empty.
🔎 Tip: Consult the tide table.
AMAZON CLIMATE
Heat, Rain and Humidity
The climate in the Amazon is hot, humid and delightfully unpredictable. Expect bright sunshine in the morning and rain showers in the afternoon – especially during the rainy season.
- Average temperatures: between 24°C and 32°C all year round.
- Rainy season: December to May – heavier rainfall, with the risk of flooded trails.
- Dry season: June to November – more stable and drier climate, ideal for hiking and longer walks.
What to bring: Lightweight, comfortable clothing, closed-toe hiking shoes, a hat or cap, a flashlight, a raincoat in your backpack and always sunscreen and insect repellent. Don’t forget your bathing suit to cool off in the fresh waters along the way and enjoy your Banho de Cheiro. The heat is intense, so a bottle of water to refill at the stops is recommended. When bathing in the river, it’s a good idea to bring a towel to dry off with, although the lodges will provide you with bath towels during your stay.
Tips on luggage: The trips will be by boat, so we recommend a light and reduced luggage to facilitate your logistics.
SAZONALITY
When to visit Combú?
Combú Island can be visited all year round, but there are more suitable times depending on the type of experience you are looking for:
- Best time to visit: from July to November, when the rains decrease and the trails are drier.
- High season: school vacations (July and December), when the flow of visitors increases.
- During the flood (December to May): the flooded landscape is enchanting, but requires more attention when traveling. Wear suitable footwear and be ready for some mud!
In addition, Combú Island is a popular destination for locals who visit the various gastronomic enterprises in the area on weekends and holidays. For a more peaceful experience, where you can enjoy the island with more calm and awareness, we recommend visiting during the week.
Final invitation: To surrender to the Amazon experience is to give up control and follow the rhythm of nature. In Combú, time slows down, rain can be a shower of blessings and every tide brings a new opportunity!
