An Amazonian Refuge on the Banks of Belém

Igarapé on Combu Island near Belém, Pará – an Amazon rainforest refuge.

Combú Island is one of the most enchanting destinations in the metropolitan region of Belém, Brazil.

Located just 15 minutes by boat from the city centre, on the banks of the Guamá River, the island is part of the Combú Island Environmental Protection Area (APA), created in 1997.

Around 1,500 people live on the island, spread across traditional riverside communities such as Beira Rio Guamá, Igarapé do Combú, and Furo da Paciência.

Houses stand on stilts, boats replace cars, and the green of the forest blends with the aroma of cocoa and Amazonian herbs.

Here, daily life and nature intertwine — in both traditional knowledge and innovative practices.

The local economy combines artisanal fishing and the extraction of açaí, cocoa, and andiroba, alongside family farming and community-based tourism, which are growing as sources of income and cultural appreciation.

How to Get to Combú Island

The crossing to Combú Island departs from the Ruy Barata River Terminal, at Praça Princesa Isabel in Belém.

It takes only 15 minutes by boat along the Guamá River to reach the island — a short trip that quickly takes visitors from the urban rhythm to the heart of the forest.

During COP30, the flow of visitors will increase significantly. Therefore, it’s essential to book your tour in advance with Vida Caboca Turismo, one of the official operators of the Combú Route.
